Field Closures

FIELD CLOSURE information

Parents and coaches are encouraged to check our website, Twitter, Facebook, or their emails should there be any question regarding whether or not rain colorfields are open or closed.  FIELDS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED OPEN UNLESS YOU HEAR FROM THE CLUB or a coach decides to cancel a session due to field conditions.

Should fields be deemed unsafe or compromised by weather, the Club will inform its members through the above mentioned mediums.

There may be times that the decision regarding whether or not a field is open is a ‘game time’ decision made by the referee.  When these decisions are made, we expect our members to cooperate and abide by the decision of the official.  The information below is from the City of Abbotsford’s website.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

An “OPEN” sports field is available for current permit holders as designated by the Field Coordinator. However, when sports fields are designated open, pre-game field checks still must be completed by the referee and coaches to verify the safety and playability of the surface at that time. Fields that have become unsafe since the last inspection or are in a position to sustain significant surface damage should be “closed” by the referees and/or coaches.

It may be necessary to close the fields for play due to adverse weather conditions, unsafe playing conditions or field renovations in order to avoid injuries to players and to prevent major damage to turf.

During periods of potential inclement weather, generally November to March, when normal play may cause damage to fields, or compromise the safety of users, fields are inspected and reported upon as to the present conditions.

Field Inspection Procedure

IceBallThese inspections occur daily during the business week to determine field status. Parks staff report on conditions daily prior to 12 pm for daily status.

Prior to 12 pm on Fridays, the weekend field status will be reported. This status applies for the entire weekend until further inspections and reports to the website and the hotline are updated, on the first business day of the next week. Field status over the weekend cannot be changed but are monitored by weekend staff, to ensure safety.

Fields are closed to prevent situations that may lead to player injury and degradation of the field surfaces. Conditions that warrant field closures are:

  • Standing water
  • Frozen or snow covered field surface
  • Excessive wear
  • Excessive frost
  • Weather forecasts stating inclement weather
