More Success for the Men’s Senior Team Program
Following two major cup victories (Pakenham Cup & Soccer City Cup) during the 2013 Fall season, the MFMFC Men’s program entered new terriority this Spring/Summer with entry into the Reserve Division of the Pacific Coast Soccer League (PCSL).
In their inaugural season, the Mariners men have been in irresistible form and have ended the regular 14 game season sitting proudly atop the division to claim the Reserve Division Championship.
The team will now participate in the 2013 PCSL Challenge Cup Tournament
The 2013 Challenge Cup Tournament for all four divisions in the PCSL will be hosted by Coquitlam Metro-Ford SC over the weekend of July 27 – 28 at Coquitlam Town Centre, Coquitlam, BC. CLICK HERE for the complete tournament match schedule.
Weekend Win Secures League Championship
With two games still to play in the regular season, the PCSL Mariners Men’s team rendered those matches moot, sending West Vancouver home on Sunday following a 5 -1 victory by the locals securing top spot in the PCSL Men’s Reserve Division. The Mariners won the league championship as ‘rookies’ in this division, being brand new to the PCSL league.
These same two teams played to a scoreless draw just two weeks ago and, with West Vancouver still in the hunt for top spot in the league, this game promised to be an exciting one. The lads didn’t disappoint. Both sides began the game with energy and enthusiasm, clearly testing each other with quick, accurate passing. An early breakthrough for the Mariners really opened up the match. Zenow Renaerts took a long pass from midfielder Tyson Hunter and converted a world class goal by beating his defender and blasting home a shot from 12 yards out.
The Mariners thought they had doubled the lead in the 20th minute when another nice play ended with the ball in the back of West Van’s net only to be called back on a very close offside decision. Just seven minutes later, the home lads did double the lead when Connor O’Neill feathered a pass through to striker Justin Sekhon who dazzled two West Van defenders before neatly tucking the ball past the West Van netminder for his league leading 14th goal.
Abbotsford seemed in firm control of the match at that point having several more chances but lacking finish. On a rare defensive lapse, West Van found an opening deep down the Mariner left flank forcing Mariner goalkeeper Mark Village to challenge the striker. A foul called on Village had West Van stepping up for a penalty kick in the 40th minute. With Village stopping the initial penalty shot, the West Van shooter followed in and buried the rebound.
The Mariners responded almost right away with Sekhon popping in his second of the match at the 44th minute with an unselfish pass from fellow striker Daniel Molendijk who laid off a wonderful ball to Sekhon.
Leading 3 – 1 at the half, the Mariners began the second 45 minutes with numerous substitutions that simply picked up where the starters had left off. Demonstrating great ball control, patience and creativity, the Abbotsford squad peppered the West Van defence and goalie with shots from all angles and distances. The Mariners added to their goal tally with a wonderful buildup that had James Najman find fellow striker Daniel Davidson in the 53rd minute. The scoring was completed in the 89th minute when Trevor O’Neill found Najman down the right side. Najman beat his man deep in the West Van zone and then deftly chipped the ball over the goalie from a tough angle, finding the net.
The Mariners play their final home game at Rotary Stadium against the Mid-Isle Highlanders. Game time is 2:00 pm on Saturday July 20th. Come on out and cheer on your local champions! Abbotsford closes out their season against the TSS Academy on Wednesday July 24th at Holly Turf in Delta. Game time is 7:30 pm.
